Park & Neighborhood Cleanup Trikes
We built this tricycle for a community services group in Alkmaar, Holland. They use it with a team of mentally challenged men to clean the town's parks, squares and neighborhoods. One worker rides the bicycle while four or five others pick up street trash with sticks and bags. The full bags get tossed into the box where they can be ridden to the nearest deposit location. Special compartments around the box hold the pickup sticks, bag holder rings, water bottles, brooms and other tools.
Because this bike is piloted by riders of varying abilities and skills it has to be extremely heavy-duty. The box, for example, is made from tough 19mm "betonplex" (concrete molding plywood). The wheels are 19" and 23" moped units. This trike is no speed demon but its easy to ride, safe and essentially indestructible.
