Frog 48

Lightweight First Pedal Bike for Early Learners Aged 4 to 5 Years

WorkCycles has been quietly selling the excellent, lightweight kids bikes from Frog for several years. To be blunt most mainstream kids bikes are awful; lousy ergonomics, poor quality, nonfunctional suspension, horrid cartoon graphics and almost as heavy as the kids trying to ride them. In contrast Frog bikes are high quality, very lightweight and come in nice gender-neutral colors. Our customers (both kids and parents) have been really happy with their Frog bikes.

The second smallest Frog has 16” wheels and weighs only 6,75kg. That’s about half the weight of most typical kids bikes which makes this one far easier for kids to handle. Frog recommends the 48 for 4-5 year olds but our experience is that many a three year old will already be big enough for it.

The Frog 48 is a single-speed and has hand brakes with levers designed for little hands.  It’s been thoughtfully designed with features such as narrow cranks, rounded axle bolts and easy rolling tires. It’s available in red, orange, pink, froggy green and white with coloured spots.

Worth noting: Kids learn cycling best on a run bike (a.k.a. “balance bike”, a little bicycle without pedals). So called “training wheels” hinder the child’s learning process and we do not fit them. Here’s a piece I wrote years ago about teaching kids to cycle at a young age:
